On 04/26/2022 The Noble County Sheriff's Office received a call from On Star stating that a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse had been stolen from Canton, OH, and was being tracked exiting I-77 at exit 25, near Caldwell. Sheriff Mackie and Deputies responded to the area.
Sheriff Mackie observed the stolen 2020 Chevrolet Traverse at the intersection of SR78 & SR821, the driver was turning south onto SR821. As Sheriff Mackie was behind the suspect vehicle several Deputies headed to his location. While following the suspect vehicle Sheriff Mackie confirmed the license plate the vehicle began to speed up to 75 miles per hour. The vehicle then slowed and pulled onto the shoulder just south of the State Library.
Sheriff Mackie pulled over and identified himself to the driver, the driver then fled. As the driver sped off southbound SR821 a pursuit was initiated, speeds were in excess of 80 miles per hour during the pursuit. Several vehicles were passed traveling in the opposite direction as the suspect was weaving between the lanes, multiple times the suspect was observed driving without his hands on the steering wheel.
To protect the public, Sheriff Mackie passed the suspect vehicle alerting oncoming motorists, and attempted to slow the suspect. The suspect's vehicle was brought to a stop. The driver was taken into custody after a brief struggle. During a search of the suspect, suspected crack cocaine was in found his pocket. The Driver was then identified as Mario Carbenia, age 36 of Canton Ohio.
Mario Carbenia was transported to the County Jail. Deputies have charged Mario with receiving stolen property and felony of the fourth degree, as well as Failure to Comply with the order or signal of a police officer a felony of the Third degree. Addition charges are likely, pending lab results of the suspected cocaine.
Noble County Court Judge Jennifer Arnold held an arraignment hearing on Mario Carbenia and set Bond at $100,000, he remains incarcerated at this time.
