City of Vandalia Division of Fire Safety Message for residents of multi-family residential dwellings

This morning a resident of an apartment building heard a smoke detector sounding from a neighbors apartment so she called 911.  Crews arrived to find food burning on a stove top and no one home at the apartment.  Damage is limited to the stove top and fortunately no one was injured.

The important lesson learned: When you hear a smoke detector sounding, see smoke, or smell something burning get out and call 911.  All of the apartment buildings in Vandalia are suppose to have smoke detectors but very few have automatic fire alarm systems that when activated call 911.  So you are the most important link in the 911 system..#SeeSomethingSaySomething.

Our happy ending today was made possible by a properly operating smoke detector and an alert and responsible neighbor.

Check you smoke detectors!  Call the Fire Prevention Bureau if you need assistance with smoke or CO detectors and please Stay Safe!
