The University of Akron Strong Performance Culminate Akron's Efforts at MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

The University of Akron track and field team culminated its efforts at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Bowling Green on Saturday, Feb. 25 pulling in five MAC titles and five runner-up performances.

Akron's men's team placed third in the men's field with 128 points, while the women's squad tallied 32.50 points in the team competition.

Freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) was named the league's Freshman of the Year for running events after garnering second-place finishes in the men's 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Senior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) won her fifth MAC title besting the field in the women's 60 meters in a season-best time of 7.46. Additionally, she added team points placing fourth in the women's 200 meters in 24.55.
• Senior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) captured his third league title in the men's high jump besting the competition at 6-10 (2.08m).
• Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) won his third MAC title winning the men's 400 meters, while senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) garnered all-conference accolades for the eighth time crossing the line second in 49.71.
• Masai ran a school-record time of 8:04.14 in the men's 3,000 meters to earn second-team All-MAC honors for the second time.
• Freshman Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) collected All-MAC laurels for the first time on the strength of a career-best mark of 54-5.25 (16.59m) to place second in the men's shot put. Sophomore Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) contributed team points finishing third in the men's shot put with a mark of 54-4 (16.56m).
• Sophomore Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) contributed team points eclipsing 11-10.25 (3.61m) to place third in the women's pole vault.
• Redshirt junior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) registered a fourth-place showing in the women's 800 meters crossing the line in 2:13.02.
• Tallying team points with fourth- and fifth-place showings in the men's triple jump was redshirt junior Caleb Mabins (Erie, Pa.) and junior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) with marks of 48-7.75 (14.83m) and 48-7.50 (14.82m).
• Harkelroad added team points placing fourth in the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.90.
• Freshman Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) netted team points in the women's 400 meters finishing sixth in 56.92
• Redshirt junior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) culminated the men's heptathlon with a seven-event cumulative score of 4,454.

UP NEXT:
Akron will culminate its indoor campaign as redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown) is expected to earn a qualifying berth in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 10-11, in Albuquerque, N.M.
