State Reps. Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) and Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville) held a press conference today in Columbus to announce legislation aimed at updating Ohio’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) law.

The proposed legislation seeks to ensure student athletes receive appropriate compensation by bridging the gap between NIL Collectives and state institutions. It also aims to allow universities to directly participate in compensating student athletes.

“Our flagship universities compete to recruit the best athletes in the country,” said Mathews. “This bill enables our students to have schools and organizations working together to provide them with the best legal guidance and platforms to succeed on and off the field.”

“Our goal is to continue to allow Ohio’s student athletes and universities to compete in the new, ever-expanding world of NIL,” said Edwards.

The legislation is currently awaiting a bill number and House committee assignment.
