The Ohio House of Representatives has passed House Bill 660, which seeks to update the state's Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) law. This bill was announced by State Representative Jay Edwards from Nelsonville, who is sponsoring the legislation along with State Representative Adam Mathews from Lebanon.

The primary goal of this legislation is to ensure that student athletes receive appropriate compensation by enabling universities to collaborate officially in the process of paying them. This initiative aims to connect the NIL Collective with state institutions more effectively.

"This was a monumental step forward, empowering athletes to earn compensation for their hard work, dedication and talent while representing our state’s institutions on the field, court, or arena," said Edwards.

In a related development last month, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an Executive Order that allows institutions to directly pay student-athletes. The current legislation intends to formalize this order into Ohio law.

House Bill 660 will now proceed to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
